Why Skate and Classic?

Our most frequently asked question regarding our skate/classic clinics is: I just want to learn to skate ski - why do I need to know how to classic ski? The answer to that question is that the fundamentals of skate skiing (high hips, weight transfer, balance, etc…) lie in classic skiing technique. With years and years of coaching under our belts, we feel that to be a good skate skier you must also learn to be a good classic skier.

CLINIC DESCRIPTIONS

The 3-day and 5-day Classic/Skate Combination clinics are the most popular clinics we offer.  We’ve also added a new 2-day Classic/Skate Combination clinic.  These clinics are open to all level skiers who want to become more efficient in both classic and skate techniques.  Each day will begin with a short indoor session to introduce technique followed by two on-snow sessions, ½ day (morning) classic skiing and ½ day (afternoon) skate skiing.  The focus for the clinics will be on technique with specific attention to efficiency and power on varying terrain.   Building your training base will come naturally as we spend significant time on skis throughout the clinics.  Participants will be divided into groups based on ability.  One evening there will be a presentation by Scott Johnson on effective training programs.  In addition, the 5-day clinic will incorporate some on-snow training concepts (intervals, speed work, specific strength).   Because of this, the 5-Day clinic is not recommended for true beginners.  Clinic participants should be sure to bring both classic (wax-able) and skate skis to West Yellowstone (see Ski Equipment).
